DETROIT -- Zach McAllister gave up lots of runs in the middle innings last season. This year? So far, so good. McAllister allowed a run and four hits in six innings and Yan Gomes hit a two-run double in the Cleveland Indians 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. McAllister (2-0) walked two and struck out four. "He used his fastball well early in the game," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "It was a great effort. He kept us off the field." The Tigers had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but McAllister got Nick Castellanos on a flyball that centre fielder Michael Bourn ran down in deep right-centre and then elevated a fastball to strike out Alex Avila swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. "That was a big inning for me," McAllister said. "The middle innings was where I couldnt get out of trouble last season." John Axford pitched the ninth for his fifth save for Cleveland, which had lost 18 of its previous 23 against Detroit. Axford got out of a jam with a runner on third to seal the win. Avila doubled and went to third on Bourns error with one out. Axford then struck out pinch-hitter Don Kelly and got Rajai Davis on a groundout to end the game. Brian Shaw pitched a scoreless seventh, but Cody Allen gave up an unearned run in the eighth when Francona called for a replay review on the play at first base on a bunt single by Detroits Ian Kinsler and the safe call was upheld. That put runners on first and second with no outs. Torii Hunter grounded into a double play -- after not being able to get a sacrifice bunt down -- and Miguel Cabrera singled to make it 3-2. Victor Martinez followed with a single, but Allen fanned Austin Jackson to end the inning. Miguel Cabrera drove in both runs for the Tigers. Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez (0-1) gave up three runs -- two earned -- and two hits in five innings, walking four and striking out eight. "The cold was just incredible. Ive never pitched in this kind of weather in my life," Sanchez said. "Even in Minnesota, it has always been in the 40s, and today it was more like 30. In the first inning, I never got warm. "After that, I got a little better and I was able to get ahead of the hitters." Gomes gave the Indians a 3-1 lead in the second with his triple that scored Asdrubal Cabrera, who reached on an error by Cabrera at first, and David Murphy, who walked. NOTES: All players on both teams wore No. 42 in observance of "Jackie Robinson Day." Tuesday was the official celebration around the majors, but the game between Detroit and Cleveland was postponed due to inclement weather. It was 42 degrees when the game began Wednesday night. ... Bourn made his season debut after missing the first 13 games with a left hamstring strain he suffered during spring training. Bourn came off the disabled list Tuesday. He was 0 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. ... Due to early season postponements, Detroit LHP Drew Smyly -- the Tigers fifth starter -- has yet to start a game. He has made two relief appearances and hasnt allowed a run in six innings. Smyly is scheduled to make his first start Friday. ... Thursday afternoons scheduled starters are RHPs Justin Verlander (1-1, 2.57 ERA) for the Tigers and Danny Salazer (0-1, 6.75) for the Indians. 49ers Super Bowl Jerseys . -- Miguel Angel Jimenez quickly shifted his focus back to the Ryder Cup after winning his first Champions Tour event. The D-Backs came into being in 1998 and appear destined to finish second in the AL West after the Tsunami that is the Los Angeles Dodgers swept over them. I thought it might be interesting to see what the D-backs have done over their 16 years compared to what the Blue Jays have done over their past 16 campaigns. Arik Armstead Super Bowl Jersey .J. -- Travis Zajac of the New Jersey Devils took a lot of grief considering his scored the first of his career-best three goals just 12 seconds into a crucial game against the Florida Panthers. Kendrick Bourne Super Bowl Jersey . -- Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a broken bone below his right eye after being struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelining the star slugger for at least a week with opening day on deck. SAN FRANCISCO -- Francisco Liriano didnt make a lot of consistent pitches in the strike zone. The few times when the Pirates left-hander did find his spots, the results were just as frustrating. So much for chasing history. Liriano lasted just four innings in his bid to become the first Pirates southpaw in more than 20 years with 15 wins, and the San Francisco Giants made their former farmhand pay for his lack of control in a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday night. "The whole night was a battle for me," said Liriano, who pitched with runners on base in every inning. "I was getting deep in counts, 3-2 counts a lot. Every time I made some good pitches they fouled them off or found a way to put them in play." Nearly all of the damage off Liriano (14-6) came in the first when the Giants batted around and scored four times. Liriano, who had allowed only one run over his previous 16 innings, gave up three straight hits to open the inning, including Buster Poseys broken-bat RBI single. Brett Pill followed with a check swing infield single that drove in Joaquin Arias and made it 2-0. After Posey scored on Pablo Sandovals groundout, Gregor Blanco added an RBI single to give the Giants a 4-0 lead. "Just inconsistent command," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He had to battle. It was a street fight for four innings. He didnt have it tonight. The rhythm was inconsistent and the command was inconsistent." The Giants chased Liriano after the fourth but added on against the Pirates bullpen. Hector Sanchez was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Jared Hughes, making it 5-1. Even when things went right for the Pirates, there was a twist. Tony Sanchez hit his first career home run for Pittsburgh but the team was unable to retrieve the milestone ball. Fans in the outfield bleachers at AT&T Park threw a ball back onto the field but it was not one used by major league baseball. The loss dropped the Pirates into a first-place tie wwith St.dddddddddddd Louis in the NL Central with 33 games left in the regular season. "People were worried about us being a .500 ballclub and the next thing you know were neck and neck going into the end of the season," centre fielder Andrew McCutchen. "The expectations, we exceeded those. Now we the opportunity to do even more." Posey had three hits and Sandoval drove in two runs to back Tim Lincecums uneven outing. Lincecum (7-13) pitched into the sixth inning after two rocky starts for his first win in more than two weeks. The former two-time NL Cy Young winner walked four but struck out eight and pitched out of trouble in back-to-back innings before giving way to the bullpen. Six San Francisco relievers completed the six-hitter. Sergio Romo worked the ninth for his 31st save. "It was great to see us put up some early runs," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We havent done that in awhile, especially at home. Timmy rebounded from a rough start and I thought the early runs helped." The Pirates knocked Lincecum out of the game in the sixth inning after McCutchen drew a one-out walk and Pedro Alvarez doubled. Pinch-hitter Gaby Sanchez singled off reliever Jose Mijares to drive in McCutchen. Tony Sanchez followed with an RBI single to trim the lead to 5-3. Pittsburgh had the tying runs on base later in the inning but Machi struck out Andrew Lambo and got Cliff Barnes to ground out. The Pirates also had two runners on in the seventh but failed to score. NOTES: Pirates leadoff hitter Starling Marte was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right hand before the game. Martes replacement, Lambo, was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game and went hitless in three at-bats. ...
