With uncertainty around DeShone Kizer Womens Clay Matthews Jersey , the 2019 NFL Draft might be a prime time for Green Bay to re-employ the Ron Wolf strategy of the 1990s in developing quarterbacks."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections The APC PodcastPackers Film RoomFantasy Football Advicereturning to a yearly QB draft strategy in 2019New,30commentsWith uncertainty around DeShone Kizer, the 2019 NFL Draft might be a prime time for Green Bay to re-employ the Ron Wolf strategy of the 1990s in developing quarterbacks.CDTShareTweetShareShareThe Packers stand to benefit from returning to a yearly QB draft strategy in 2019In his first offseason as General Manager of the Green Bay Packers, Brian Gutekunst shared at least one similarity with former GM Ron Wolf: he traded for a quarterback castoff. DeShone Kizer, acquired from the Cleveland Browns after just one season with the team, was a once-regarded first round talent that dropped to the second. Green Bay was reportedly interested in Kizer during that 2017 NFL Draft and made the surprising move to trade for the Notre Dame product once he became available. Likewise, Wolf shocked many Packers fans when he dealt for Brett Favre, another player that slipped to the second round of the draft and had worn out his welcome in Atlanta. But while Kizer has not come close to displaying Favre-like ability in the pros, Gutekunst’s decision did represent a return to prioritizing the backup quarterback position, even with an established starter at the helm. The Packers selected a quarterback in seven of Wolf’s 10 years in charge of the roster, in addition to trading for Favre in the 1992 offseason. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Wolf described his reasoning for the strategy. But while Favre continued to be available on the field, the philosophy shifted a little when Mike Sherman took the driver’s seat with just one quarterback in three drafts, and continued even under Wolf disciple Ted Thompson. Thompson drafted the position sporadically, selecting five quarterbacks in 13 drafts. However Marcedes Lewis Jersey White , three of those occurrences came within his first four years as GM. The last time Green Bay drafted a signal caller was Brett Hundley in 2015.The benefits to an annual quarterback draftee are noted. Most important is the insurance of grooming a capable spot starter in case of injury. The Packers have really struggled with this in particular over the past five years outside of Matt Flynn’s heroic moments of 2010 and 2011. The low-cost talent acquired via undrafted and street free agency to back up Aaron Rodgers was a liability, especially as Hundley failed to show progress after two full years of prior seasoning.Meanwhile, trade collateral is an added advantage with drafting quarterbacks. While the hope is that there will be minimal chances for a backup to showcase his skills, a backup’s preseason action and opportunities when pressed into action can provide later trade value. For every Jay Barker of the Wolf era that fizzled in the pros, there were players like Matt Hasselbeck, whose value appreciated over time. Identifying a franchise quarterback will never be an approach that goes out of style and, in fact, the cost of finding one is only rising.Although Wolf called drafting quarterbacks “blind luck,” he was almost 50-50 in finding a future starting quarterback in the later rounds and selling them later. With Favre stabilizing the starting spot, here is a look at the return value of Wolf’s quarterback selections.Packers quarterbacks drafted under Ron WolfDraft YearRoundPlayerValue to Green BayDraft YearRoundPlayerValue to Green BayWith Kizer failing to impress in 2018 and undrafted Tim Boyle sliding into the third quarterback role as a rookie, the Packers are in position to re-initiate an annual third-day, quarterback-drafting strategy this year. Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson, Washington State’s Gardner Minshew, and Vanderbilt’s Kyle Shurmur, the son of New York Giants head coach Pat Mike Daniels Jersey , make up three of a number of potential prospects available in the fourth round and beyond. Even if Green Bay does not find a diamond in the rough, a late-round pick could provide valuable training camp competition to Green Bay’s current depth. But if the Packers do, they could bolster their roster in both the short and long terms. As Gutekunst continues to add competition and increase the talent level at a variety of positions on the Packers’ roster in 2019, quarterback is not one that should be neglected with 10 April selections. And while drafting quarterbacks may indeed be blind luck, the value derived from the Packers’ strategy of the 1990s was far from it. GREEN BAY, Wis. — New Packers coach Matt LaFleur had a long to-do list even before his players arrived for the start of offseason workouts this week.Packers CoverageTop Tweets: Wisconsin celebrates Bucks’ winPackers’ Ted Thompson diagnosed with autonomic disorderPackers 2019 undrafted free agent capsulesPackers officially sign Gary, Savage, four other 2019 draft picksFeeling like himself again, Packers’ Madison ready to get back to gridironTop Tweets: Packers’ Valdes-Scantling still adjusting to Wisconsin weatherHow NFL draft affected Packers’ 2019 opponentsGreen Bay Packers 2019 NFL Draft gradesGreen Bay Packers 2019 NFL draft capsulesPackers close out 2019 draft, select LB Summers in seventh roundThe drama that started in Green Bay with the December firing of coach Mike McCarthy has bubbled into the spring, with McCarthy ripping the front office for how it handled his dismissal, and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers defending himself after coming under fire over his performance and leadership.Enveloped by controversies that predated his arrival in January, LaFleur faces the challenge of turning around a franchise that reached the playoffs eight consecutive seasons — including one Super Bowl victory and two more appearances in conference championship games — before having back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since the early 1990s.It’s going to take more than a fresh coat of paint down the hallway that leads from the locker room to the field and reassigned seats in the team meeting room to get the Packers back into championship contention.“We had a standard here of going to the playoffs every single year,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “We did that eight years in a row and we were competitive and in the mix, and then the last couple of years Jason Spriggs Jersey White , obviously, have been frustrating to finish.“I think we’re in a good spot. I think there isn’t a grace period. This isn’t like other transitions where you maybe give a pass for the first year or two as you get acclimated to the system. We have a veteran quarterback, veteran offensive linemen, we signed some big free agents. There’s an expectation living and playing here that you’re going to compete for championships, and I think we all expect to do that.”Rodgers and LaFleur will be at the center of reaching those expectations. Rodgers, 35, played through a serious knee injury to start all 16 games last season, but endured one of his worst years of his career. LaFleur, 39, will be tasked with getting Rodgers back to his two-time MVP form and changing the culture of a team that had hit hard times during the final two seasons of McCarthy’s 13-year tenure. After running McCarthy’s offense throughout his first 11 seasons as starting quarterback, Rodgers is getting his first taste of what LaFleur wants to do. At the scouting combine in February, LaFleur said offensive success required a “partnership” between himself and Rodgers.“Matt’s whole idea,” said Rodgers’ No. 1 target, receiver Davante Adams, “he’s really open and receptive to how Aaron and I want to attack this season and how we feel moving forward Womens Bryan Bulaga Jersey , bringing certain things from the past that we liked, and just having an open mind, which is a great thing when you’re coming in trying to get a team to buy in.”A new coach and new playbook aren’t the only big changes. Two longtime stalwarts, receiver Randall Cobb and linebacker Clay Matthews, departed in free agency. Meanwhile, they added outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, safety Adrian Amos and offensive lineman Billy Turner in free agency. A pair of first-round picks will infuse more talent.“Change, it can be really good if you embrace it,” Rodgers said.Echoing what LaFleur has said, Rodgers added the play caller/quarterback relationship will be critical to reversing the team’s fortunes. Rodgers talked to one of LaFleur’s former pupils, a Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, to get a gauge on his new boss.Impressed by what he heard, and with his injured knee healed, Rodgers was eager to get to Green Bay to start fostering that relationship and to shake off the sting of last season’s 6-9-1 debacle.“Having that much time off was different,” said Rodgers Womens Aaron Jones Jersey , who had grown accustomed to playing into January.“I know many of us were itching to get back here and get started. Anytime you’ve gone through a stretch like we went through where everything was very similar — similar faces, there might be some changes, similar plays, similar environment you’re working in — you get used to that and accustomed that.“When things change, it kind of jogs the system a little bit. It’s exciting, though, to see the energy and the excitement. It’s usually like this the first week, but I feel good about the potential to sustain this type of energy as we move into it later this month and get into the minicamp. And then obviously we have a number of high picks, so there should be a lot of excitement with our fan base. There is definitely in the locker room. It’s been a good start to the change.”
